The blogosphere is in a tizzy over the early release of convicted killer Oscar Pistorius, the Paralympic gold medalist who admitted to killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, 29 in February 2013. Pistorius, who was sentenced to 5 years in prison on the charge and conviction of culpable homicide, stated that he shot her four times through a locked bathroom door because he believed she was an intruder. Neighbors testified that they could hear Steenkamp’s “blood curdling” screams on the night of her death.  Pistorius, who had been involved in prior domestic violence incidents, was taken into custody and charged with her death.

In the wake of the announcement that Pistorius will be freed after serving just 10 months of a five-year sentence, South African state prosecutors filed an appeal on Monday against the verdict of culpable homicide passed on Oscar Pistorius, arguing the athlete should have been convicted of murder.

Pistorius is being freed under South African’s guidelines for “non-dangerous” offenders.

Now, how did authorities come to the conclusion that  Oscar Pistorius is not dangerous?

Emanuela Grinberg of CNN is reporting Major League Baseball Player David Denson, 20, has announced that he is gay, making him the first openly gay active player in league history. Denson, a first baseman for the Milwaukee Brewers’ rookie affiliate in Helena, Montana, disclosed the news to the Milwaukee Sentinel Journal, after sharing it with his family and teammates. Grinberg writes:

“The news makes Denson the first active player affiliated with a Major League organization to come out publicly.

‘Talking with my teammates, they gave me the confidence I needed, coming out to them,’ Denson told sports writer Tom Haudricourt.

‘They said, ‘You’re still our teammate. You’re still our brother. We kind of had an idea, but your sexuality has nothing to do with your ability. You’re still a ballplayer at the end of the day. We don’t treat you any different. We’ve got your back.’

Denson, who is batting .245 with four home runs and 18 RBIs in 42 games for Helena, is the Brewers’ 27th-ranked prospect, according to MLB.com. He was selected by the Brewers in the 15th round of the 2013 Major League Baseball Draft out of South Hills High School in West Covina, California.”

Faith Karimi of CNN  is reporting that civil rights leader and former board chairman of the NAACP Julian Bond has died.

Bond died Saturday night after a brief illness in Fort Walton Beach, Florida, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center, which he served as founding president in the 1970s.

Karimi writes:

“‘Not only has the country lost a hero today, we’ve lost a great friend,’ the legal advocacy group said in a statement.

The Tennessee native was on the forefront of the 1960s civil rights movement and was among activists who demanded equal rights for African-Americans.

‘With Julian’s passing, the country has lost one of its most passionate and eloquent voices for the cause of justice,’ said Morris Dees, co-founder of the SPLC.

Bond campaigned for equal rights for minorities beyond the United States.

In 1985, police arrested him outside the South African Embassy in Washington, where he was protesting against apartheid, the legalized racial segregation enforced by South Africa at the time.

He advocated not just for African-Americans, but for every group, indeed every person subject to oppression and discrimination because he recognized the common humanity in us all,’ Dees said.

Bond was elected to the Georgia House of Representatives in 1965, but his white colleagues in the House refused to let him take his seat because of his opposition to the Vietnam War. A year later, the Supreme Court accused the Legislature of violating his freedom of speech and ordered it to seat him.”

Bond, who helped found the Student Nonviolent Coordination Committee (SNCC), served in the Senate and was Chairman of the NAACP for 10 years. An educator, the Morehouse College graduate taught at Harvard University, the University of Pennsylvania, American University and the University of Virginia. Bond’s father Horace Mann Bond served as president of Lincoln University and Fort Valley State University and his mother Julia Bond was a librarian for Clark Atlanta University.

Mr. Bond is survived by his wife Pamela Horowitz and five children. He was 75.

Cande writes:

“Tensions, fed by overlapping duties in Guinea Bissau’s semi-presidential system, have grown between the president and Prime Minister Domingos Simoes Pereira since elections restored civilian rule last year following a 2012 coup. In a presidential statement issued late on Wednesday announcing his decision to dismiss Pereira and his cabinet with immediate effect, Vaz referred to what he called “a breach of trust” between the two men.
There was no immediate reaction from the prime minister, but PAIGC, the ruling party to which both Vaz and Pereira belong, was due to hold a press conference in the capital Bissau on Thursday. Pereira had previously said PAIGC was planning a convention this year to address the tensions, with a committee expected to study the constitution and clarify the two leaders’ responsibilities.”

Writing for The Root, The Burton Wire‘s founder & editor-in-chief Nsenga K. Burton, Ph.D. reviews F. Gary Gray’s highly-anticipated film Straight Outta Compton, which chronicles the lives of hip-hop super group N.W.A. Check out an excerpt from the article below:

“Straight Outta Compton is a film that brilliantly captures the energy of a group of friends raging against the post-industrial machine in a city on the brink of eruption. Directed by F. Gary Gray, Straight Outta Compton tells the story of N.W.A, one of the most notorious and iconic rap groups in music history, and how the members climbed from the ghetto to musical superstardom against all odds.

The group’s seminal album, which gave birth to gangsta rap with hits such as “F–k Tha Police,” “Straight Outta Compton,” “Express Yourself” and “Dopeman,” lends its name to a coming-of-age tale about a group of talented friends, living in a world marked by crime, violence, and constant police occupation and surveillance. These boys in the hood were searching for a way out of the ghetto and found it through music, poetry, collaboration and consciously choosing to pursue a different world.

Gray, who hails from Los Angeles, humanizes the maligned members of the supergroup, showcasing the complexity and interconnectedness of their lives and musical genius. He peels away the layers of men who started out as boys with literally a pen and a pad and two 1600 turntables.

Part of the pleasure of the film is not only reliving the memorable pop-culture moments but also seeing the humanity of the characters, who are often regarded as one-dimensional thugs who made it big by glamorizing violence and spouting misogynistic lyrics.

Gray shows audiences that the men behind the mic are funny, sensitive, tough, abusive, naive, violent, obstinate, agreeable, conscious, lewd—complicated in the ways that many young people, who are finding their way in a world that is not welcoming to them, can be.”

Nekala Alexander of Atlanta Black Star is reporting Moziah Bridges, 13, has built a successful business which has produced $200,000 in sales with his bow tie business, his business could be growing so much he might just have to start looking into accepting different online payment methods so more people can get their hands on these bow ties! When it comes to starting a business, age isn’t an issue. If you’re a similar age to Nekala and have a business idea that you want to execute, what better time to start than now? Maybe understanding the concept of something like strategy development may not come as easy as it may to someone with more experience, but knowing how to build a business and keep your customers happy is a start. We all have space to grow, no matter how old we are.

She writes:

“His name is Moziah Bridges and he is the CEO of Mo’s Bows. The teenage fashion designer started his company in 2011 at the tender age of nine when he asked his grandmother to teach him how to sew. He took her scraps of fabric and began making unique bow ties. Not long after, Mo’s Bows began selling to local stores and online. He may begin to use software such as the ones explained here –https://www.ivalua.com/solutions/process/strategic-sourcing/supplier-management/vendor-management-software/ – to make life easier on the digital storefront, as the business is booming!

On his website Bridges explains his passion for making bow ties saying, ‘I like to wear bow ties because they make me look good and feel good. Designing a colorful bow tie is just part of my vision to make the world a fun and happier place.’

And as his vision is becoming actualized, the Memphis native went a step further into philanthropy. ‘I made this bow tie called the Go Mo! Scholarship Bow Tie and 100 percent of the proceeds go to help kids go to summer camp because I feel like it’s good to help the community and that’s what I’m doing,’ Bridges said.

Bridges appeared on Shark Tank in 2014 to pitch Mo’s Bows to potential investors. He had to choose between accepting $50,000 for his innovative idea while sharing royalties with Kevin O’Leary, or have John as a mentor. The young businessman chose John’s influence over money, and so far the decision has proven to be a wise one.”

Bridges leads a staff of five people, some of whom needed sales training courses before going on to help the business. Sales training is an immensely important part of any business, especially one so small and promising as this!

Madeleine Davies of Jezebel.com is reporting Charnesia Corley, a 21-year-old black woman from Houston, Texas, was pulled over by a police officer in June and vaginally searched because the officer claimed he smelled marijuana in her car. Davies writes:

“The deputy claimed he smelled marijuana on Corley, and subsequently cuffed her and put her in the back of his patrol car while he searched her vehicle. Finding nothing, the deputy called a female officer to the scene to perform a vaginal search. Yes, a vaginal search. All because he suspected she had weed. According to Corley, the female officer, upon her arrival, ‘tells me to pull my pants down, I said, ‘Ma’am, I don’t have any underwear on.’ She says, ‘Well, that doesn’t matter. Pull your pants down.’”

Corley was then forced to submit to the vaginal search, although she told the female police officer that she could not perform the search. Corley, who was handcuffed, was forcibly thrown to the ground, while another female officer was called in to help hold her legs open to conduct the search, after she resisted.

Corley was booked for resisting arrest and possession of marijuana. The male police officer maintains that she consented to the search.

Color us crazy but if you smell marijuana in a car, then shouldn’t you search the car? And you thought Crash was a movie?

Caribbean 360 is reporting that Trinidadian police have confirmed a threat against the life of opposition leader Dr. Keith Rowley.

National Security Minister Brigadier Carl Alfonso has confirmed that police are investigating the threat, after denying any knowledge about such a threat Sunday in the Trinidad Express.

The author reports:

“Local media reports today quoted Alfonso as saying that Deputy Commissioner of Police Glenn Hackett yesterday morning officially informed him that lawmen had received a report that Rowley’s life was in danger, and security for the People’s National Movement (PNM) leader had been beefed up as a result.

“I don’t know the source of the report, or who reported it to him, but he is dealing with it . . . So clearly, I must be concerned,” Alfonso said, declining to say anything more because of the ongoing investigation.

Speaking at a political meeting on Sunday, Rowley said government had hired people to kill him. Senior PNM member Faris Al-Rawi further alleged that a TT$15 million (US$2.3 million) hit had been put on Rowley.”

The investigation is ongoing with Dr. Rowley speaking out on Facebook about the ordeal.

Rosie Perez Forced to Apologize to Kelly Osbourne?

Fresh from our ‘We Can’t Make This Stuff Up” file, The Daily Mail (UK) is reporting that ‘The View’ co-host Rosie Perez left the show before the end of her contract, after being forced to apologize to Kelly Osbourne for making racist remarks. The writer reports:

“Rosie refused to turn up for her two, final live shows last week and skipped several, pre-taped appearances after having an intense blow-up with ABC executives over Kelly’s on-air comment. Kelly, 30, caused outrage after asking: ‘If you kick every Latino out of this country, then who is going to be cleaning your toilet, Donald Trump?’ during a Hot Topics segment about Donald Trump’s poll numbers within the community last Tuesday. A silence fell over the studio audience as other co-hosts were clearly taken aback. After a pause, Rosie, who has Puerto Rican heritage, mumbled: ‘Oh, that’s not… oh, no!’ and shook her head in disbelief.”

After the segment, Osbourne left the set crying hysterically and producers cornered Rosie, forcing her to make an on-air apology to Kelly, for being “sensitive” about the comment. Really ABC?

Is this the same Kelly Osbourne whose co-stars on E‘s ‘Fashion Police’ made racist remarks about actress/singer Zendaya’s dreadlocks? Despite stating that she warned co-host Giuliana Rancic about the comments during the taping, Osbourne allowed it to happen anyway and then feigned anger afterwards, quitting the show, after the blow back from viewers.  Now Osbourne makes a racist remark about Latinos and Rosie Perez has to apologize to her because she’s upset that she’ll be labeled a racist? What’s wrong with this picture? What in the hell is wrong with Kelly Osbourne?

Big ups to Rosie for giving ABC your Boricua ass to kiss.

Black Businesses Resuscitating Detroit’s Resurgence

Kate Abbey-Lambertz of the Huffington Post is reporting that black owned businesses are quietly helping Detroit’s economic recovery, but getting little to no credit in the dominant narrative of the resurgence of the city, which is being led by entrepreneurs. However, new businesses are looking for a way to bring themselves to the forefront with the use of business strategies similar to those from The Alternative Board TAB and other business advising firms. These companies are going through all of the necessary steps needed, including forming an office space and sending all necessary registration paperwork, including a confirmation statement. This includes looking into the best business insurance for their companies. Due to the different options now available to new business owners it is helpful for them to have insurance that could assist with their growth and development – contacting lopriore.com or other insurance companies is the right step for any new business owner. Abbey-Lambertz writes:

“Stories that claim entrepreneurs are building, revitalizing and even saving Detroit focus primarily on white professionals, often younger and new transplants to the city, a trend that’s palpable and frustrating for locals. When journalists and readers criticized the Times for leaving blacks out of its Corktown story, the paper’s public editor addressed the lack of diversity in a follow-up, and the writer said she regretted not including a black-owned business. (A more recent Times story takes a wider-ranging view.)

It’s not difficult to find a black business owner to speak with, though. There are more than 32,000 in the city, according to U.S. Census Bureau figures from 2007. Many, particularly those who have kept their businesses going on shoestring budgets, feel excluded from conversations about Detroit’s revival and overlooked when it comes to getting access to funds and resources.

“I think, for the most part, black-owned businesses are not getting a piece of the pie,” bookstore owner Janet Jones told The Huffington Post. “What about people who have been doing the hard work of living and working and having business in Detroit for the last 20 years?”

Despite difficulties, many business owners have had their doors open for decades, something local developer George Stewart, 77, traces back to historical segregation that had white business owners refusing service to black customers.”

The article also profiles black entrepreneurs in Detroit helping to bring back Motor City.
